Salak

It was 2012 and for the first time in my life I travelled to South-East Asia, more exactly to Thailand. I had with me a sound recorder when I encoutered in the southern tip of the island of Koh Lanta a palm tree that I’ve never seen before. It had some rather long thorns along the trunk which, if plucked, emitted a marimba-like sound. I recorded them and kept in my audio archive. Later on the trip, back in my Bangkok hostel room, while there were people outside my window shouting to sell garlic and lemons, I discovered the name of the palm, it was a Salak. I loaded the sounds in a sampler and started playing with my keyboard.
