Sinsemillia

about

Marijuana is deeply embedded in the Jamaican psyche, going beyond Rastafari sacrament, taking on cultural proportions. Indians are to be partially commended for this cultural phenomenon. They either gifted Jamaica with hemp when they arrived as indentured laborers in the wake of emancipation, the end of African enslavement, in 1838; or they, knowing the plant back in India, demonstrated its versatility upon discovering it on the island. Ganja and kali, two words for the popular hemp variety in Jamaica, may have had Indian/Hindu derivative. Before and during the 1970s, cannabis came in primarily two forms: hashish and heavily seeded cannabis buds. It was then discovered that culling male plants before maturation so as to avoid any pollination would result in seedless buds after harvest. The term “sinsemilla” originates from the combination of two Spanish words: “sin” (without) and “semilla” (seed). Cannabis flowers that mature without pollination have higher levels of essential oils and are notable for being more psychoactive than seeded cannabis. The track features samples of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s voice, legendary Jamaican reggae producer and undisputed master of dub music.
